GI Joe - Rise of the Cobra ****

well what can I say? This is a typcial comic based movie, but all the same, it is a very good one. lots of action and effects. its gotthe badies trying to take over the world using new metal eating nano thingies and then there's the elite team of GI Joes, a secret team put together to keep the world safe. I sometimes wonder how noone notices the billions of dollars going in to these secret entities, but anyway...

Gamer ****

Gamer is set around a time in the future when society's morals have lowered another notch to the point that sees inmates being genetically modified so they can be controlled as part of a game. Teenagers get to control the inmates as they play them through the rounds of street and war combat and of course for the inamtes there's the chance of an eventual pardon. and again, of course, there's always corruption and the yearning for world domination motivating the badies to be bad

This was one of those movies where the makers felt that we're more interested in watching their ability to shoot an artsy flick than we are in watching the action. the scenes and camera juts around way too much and at times becomes disjointed

Apart from that though and what gained it the fourth star in my opinion, there was some good action and a good story line

Doubt ****

If you're looking for one of those movies where you get to the end and go "but was he really innocent or not???" then this is it
Doubt is a bit of a slow movie but all the same one that keeps drawing you in deeper as the head sister and principal of a school makes accusations against the priest. While watching this, I'd seen a lot of truth in the types of people portrayed and was left wondering whether trials of this nature are really mamanged in such a closed door manner - at least this day and age?

anyway - a trailer on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnrmWLp1Ub8
definately worth the watch but get in the right frame of mind from the start

The Lake House **

Sandra Bullock is one of mine and Lisa's favourite actors (Actresses?) but this one lost the plot - maybe I was too excited about the prospect of having fresh home made caramel popcorn that I wasn't paying attention, but what ever the case, this was apparently (according to Lisa) the second time we watched this. Seems it was the second time i fell asleep too. Constantly switching from past to present to future, all with no idea this was happening, was more than this brain could handle. The love story that was being forged between owners of a house present and past, with the house's mailbox being the conduit, was central to this movie's plot. Why does noone seem to ask questions in this sort of movie when the mailbox starts acting on its own and getting new mail magically?
Guessing the producer would have been better of developing this as a horror myself. The love bit just didn't work

Liar Liar ***

I used to be a fan of Jim Carey but now often find his over the top acting annoying.
All the same, we both had quite a few laughs in this one which is about a stereotypical hot-shot lawyer who puts his ambitions of reaching partner level first and foremost. Finally having enough of being forgotten by his Dad, his 5 year old son makes a wish that his Dad can't lie and that's when the fun part begins.
A story with morals, we start to learn that, apart from the initial pain, telling the truth is in fact better for the soul - but has he left things too late to rectify 5 years of neglect to his family?

A very typical plot but the laugh to time ratio is quite good

The Proposal ***

Slightly a chick flick, this movie was all the same quite enjoyable and centered around an up and coming editor who's evil boss forces him to marry her to prevent her deportation.
The usual awkward moments such as explaining to your parents (while your new fiance is watching) why you're suddenly marrying the woman you've until now referred to as the devil woman make this a funny movie

Year One *

Had big expectations for this one - the previews certainly looked funny - but not point watching more than that
A ~er-ehm~ comedy where Jack Black plays a modern caveman and is kicked out of his village for eating forbidden fruit - he does stuff, none of which is overly funny - there are a few laughs but as said, watch the preview and you'll see them all

The Hangover ***

Pretty funny but started a bit too slow to get many more stars - a Couple of guys on a Las Vegas bucks night try and remember what they did the night before so they can find their buddy and get him back in time for his big day

The funny bits were very funny - just not enough of them

BTW -fair bit of language in this one - don't watch it with Mum in the room!

Live Free or Die Hard (Die Hard 4) *****

Bruce Willis is back in his best role as McClane and trouble just finds him - no other option for poor 'ol John but to blow everything up in his effort to save the day

Fantastic movie!

Fast & Furious (2009) **

Thought this would be better - had a few beers ready to go on this one, Lisa was out, very high hopes - but it was a fizzer

some good car race scenes, but overall the action to boredom ratio was all out

Why wouldn't you jsut watch Death Race? much better for muscle cars and adrenaline

Transformers 2 ****

Some said it was over animated or too much computer generated graphics - I thought it was lots of good fun - these are the same people that wathc Die Hard and complain that he didn't die every time he falls of a 20 story building and a truck softens his landing - if he died, would there be a movie???? - Get over it, its all good

anyway, based on the 80s (??) kids cartoon, the transformers hit the big screen and cause lots of damage

if not for the poorish acting, this would have had full stars

Slumdog Millionare **

If not for the hype, I wouldn't have watched it althought as the story SLOWLY unfolded, it start to get better - the subscripts were very annoyingly small

About some Indians and their way of life and trying to find love in there somewhere

good luck

Minority Report ****

I don't know.... something about this story intrigued me. Tom Cruise is a policeman in the near future where a team is put together to prevent crimes. This is done by using 3 special (genetically modified?? mutated??) people who see the future. At least 2 forsights must match and the 3rd is the Minority Report

Anyway stuff happens in it, obvioulsy, the failsafe system shows cracks and Cruise must save the world as they know it!

Was quite good although Lisa didn't really enjoy it

Hancock ***

I enjoy most of Will Smith's movies - this one didn't do much for me - about a superhero who struggles to come to grips with the fact that he should be using his powers for good as expected of a superhero
he ultimately engages supprot from a PR manager and works to get his life in order

coould have been a good story - jsut missed the mark for me

Gran Torino ****

I enjoyed this one - Clint Eastwood plays the typical patriotic old Yank - he's seeing life in his neghbourhood change as he ages and although scared, we sense that he's seen worse over his years - all the same, he takes it upon himself to bring justice to his local town and finds an unexpected friendship with his asian neghbours along the way

Australia ***

hmmm - would have gotten another star had it not dragged for so long

an aussie drama - quite good for an aussie flick i might add, about life during the war - there's porbably some deeper meaning but it was a long time ago and the movie just k e p t o n g o i n g!!!

Death Race ****

A fun movie with car races and crashes - objective is to race to the death - the winner gets a free pass out of prison - the cars are modified with weapons and armour - of course there's baddies that are rigging the race

but JUST maybe they'll still make it....

Why Another Blog?

Simply, we watch movies - some are junk and we don't even get through them to the end - but we forget....
- we then foolishly watch them again!

GRRRRRR.......

Of course the opposite is true too - the good ones are equally forgotten
